Traveling

Scott and I will be traveling the next couple of weeks in the States for some ministry related meetings. We were blessed for the opportunity to stop for a couple of days in France on our way. I've just posted a bunch of photos on my Facebook page if you'd like to take a peek.

Jaco and Inge and their boys are going with us to the US as well to meet with the AOM board, so we ask for your prayers as we all travel.

Be blessed,  Lisa

Reiner Le Roux

After a week in the ICU, our teammates' son, Reiner passed away in South Africa. The outpouring of prayers for this family has been incredible. We ask for your continued prayers for Jaco and Inge, Ernan, Lander, and their extended family as they face this difficult loss in the weeks and months to come.

Strength Renewed with Shirley Corder + a FREE book giveaway!

Today I would like to welcome Shirley Corder to my blog. Shirl and I have been friends for many years, after meeting first on line. She runs a South African Christian writers group where she has encouraged many writers in their publishing journey. I'm so excited for her, because today is the official launch day of her book Strength Renewed.

Strength Renewed is a book of 90 meditations based on actual incidents that happened during Shirl's cancer journey, tied in with relevant scriptures. It is written in chronological order, but each story stands alone, so they may be read in any order. Each devotion includes three questions to help the reader relate the message to her own journey. Strength Renewed was written primarily for patients and their loved ones, but it will also be helpful for those walking alongside the patient as family, friends, or part of the medical team.

During Shirl's own battle with cancer, she spent much time in the botanical gardens near her home, watching a pair of Vereaux's eagles and wishing she could rise and soar over the cancer valley. Isaiah 40:31 says that those who wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength. They shall mount up with wings as eagles. This became a favorite verse for Shirl and is the foundation verse on which she based this book.

Read through my interview with Shirl, then find out how you could win a copy of this book. If you know of someone that this book might minister to, please pass on the links.
LISA: What challenges did you face as a breast cancer patient?

SHIRL: Sjoe! Where to start? Apart from the usual side-effects of treatment which are widely publicized, there were a number of unanticipated things that blind-sided me. I found myself feeling inferior to normal people who didn't have cancer. I felt insecure in company, and felt as if everyone looked down on me because of my diagnosis. I think a lot of that was caused by the number of people who felt they had to tell me why I had cancer. Although these were all things I could do nothing about, they implied it was something I had done or failed to do so it was really my own fault. But also, I had always been an efficient, active person and the fact that I was no longer efficient and often lacked the stamina to do things told me (even if no one else thought of this) that I was no longer capable.

LISA: What challenges did you face as a survivor?

SHIRL: Getting my strength back. I looked forward to the end of treatment, expecting to immediately feel better. I didn't. Only a month after I finished treatment, my oncologist explained to me that the chemo was still in my system, and it would continue to work in cycles for some time. I wish I'd been warned about this in advance.

Also getting over the sense of insecurity. I grappled with a sense of failure and found it extremely difficult to admit that something normal was too hard for me. On a number of occasions I dug in my heels like a two-year-old and said, I can do this myself and a short while later I had to crawl back in tears and say, I couldn't do it. Please will you finish it for me?

Praise the Lord for a super-patient husband, who would drop what he was doing and sort out what Iíd left unfinished. (Like the shopping cart sitting in the middle of the shop! Like the half-cooked shepherd's pie! Like the dog standing shivering with half her hair trimmed! Like . . . you get the picture!)

LISA: Today, you're a published author. When did you start writing?

SHIRL: From the age of 14, I started writing songs and skits for the church, and for a period I wrote quite a bit of poetry. But then a few years before I got cancer, I felt a strong nudge to do a correspondence course in creative writing. I never had any dreams of being published so I can only think this was one of the ways the Lord prepared me for what was to come. During cancer treatment, I did quite a bit of journaling, and a year after treatment I knew the Lord wanted me to start sharing my story through publication.

LISA: Can you share briefly your road to publication?

SHIRL: The first article I ever wrote for publication was a meditation for The Upper Room and included an anecdote from my cancer treatment. To my amazement and delight, TUR picked it up and published it. I had several published with them before moving onto other markets as well, such as The Secret Place and a number of others initially in the USA and UK, but subsequently in South Africa as well.

In 2004 I attended the Sandy Cove Christian Writers conference as a result of a scholarship awarded by the Christian Writers Group (CWG). Although I didn't sell a manuscript, I learned a tremendous amount about the writing process. I started my first website as well as an online group for Christian Writers of South Africa, now known as CWOSA.

About six years ago, I sensed a clear call from the Lord that I would one day write a book of devotional messages for people going through the cancer valley. For the next few years, I collected ideas and continued to hone my writing skills. Three years ago, I knew the time had come, and I started work on the book.

At that point, Cec Murphey contacted me and offered to sponsor me to a second writers' conference. I immediately knew this was for Rise and Soar, the working title of my devotional book. Sure enough, I met Vicki Crumpton of Revell/Baker there, which eventually led to the publication of Strength Renewed which launched this month.

LISA: How has having breast cancer impacted on your life over the years?

SHIRL: Before cancer I was an active registered nurse. After cancer I became a full-time writer. Apart from this complete career change, cancer also changed my attitude and my priorities in so many ways. I became a better listener, more patient and understanding with others, and I find it easier to drop everything and come alongside a person in need. There was the BC (before cancer) Shirley and the AC (after cancer) Shirley. And I definitely prefer the AC version!

LISA: What advice would you give to the public regarding breast health awareness?

SHIRL: Be aware that breast cancer is horribly common. (1 in 8 baby girls will grow up to get breast cancer and those are old statistics.) Yet people must also realize that many of these statistics will be survivors! The key is to catch the disease in its early stages. People must also be aware that men get breast cancer, and even more rarely, some adolescents. Although male breast cancer is not common, it has a higher rate of fatality as it is often discovered too late.

All adults should do regular self-examinations in the shower or bath, when their hands are soapy. Ladies should do them each month at the same point of their menstrual cycles. All women must have regular annual mammograms from the age of 50 or younger, depending on medical advice. Breast cancer is one of the cancers that may run in families, so those with a history of a parent or sibling diagnosed with breast cancer must be especially diligent in watching for any suspicious lumps or thickening in the breast.

LISA: Where can we find your book online?

SHIRL: The print version is available wherever good books are sold, including Amazon.com, Barnes and Noble, and ChristianBooks.com. The Kindle version is available at Amazon.com, and the Nook version is at Barnes and Noble.

LISA: Thanks so much for stopping by and sharing with my readers, Shirl. Shirl has a lot of great information, encouragement, recipes, and more on her blog, so be sure and visit her here.

NOW LET'S HEAR FROM YOU!

Please share with us a favorite Scripture that encourages you when times are hard. Leave your answer and email address under comments below and you will be entered into a draw for a free book.

Be blessed,

Lisa

Money to help the Le Roux Family

Reiner Le Roux

I have had a number of people ask me how to contribute to the Le Roux Family in regards to their youngest son Reiner’s recent accident. They have insurance that covers his medical care, but not the life flight or the specialist like the neurosurgeon. There are also personal expenses, as they have to stay in a guest flat across the street from the hospital. The banking information given on Reiner's Face Book page will only work for South Africans.

If you live outside South Africa and would like to send money to help them cover their costs you can either send a check to AOM or pay via Pay Pal.

For checks, mark ‘Le Roux Mission’ and send to:

African Outreach Ministries
PO Box 999
Fresno, Texas 77545

Or make a donation online here on the AOM Pay Pal account. If you chooses to send money this way PLEASE also send an email to Scott (click on his name) telling him you have donated so he can earmark the funds and ensure that those funds will go directly to help the family.

UPDATE ON REINER: Over the past few days there have been a lot of ups and downs in Reiner’s condition. Currently, the situation is still extremely critical. He had surgery to relieve the pressure on the brain Thursday night, but the pressure and oxygen to the brain continue to be an issue. For now, they are trying to keep him stable and are waiting for his body to start taking over again. Please continue praying for this family during this very difficult time.

Prayer for Teammate's Son

On Monday night, our teammate's son, Reiner, fell and hit his head. Because of the lack of medical care were we live, and the fact that we couldn't get a medi-flight to land here at night, his parents ended up driving him to the capital with him. We praise God that Mandy, who is a nurse and is working with our team, was able to be with him on the trip and take care of him. Scott followed behind with their other children.
Arrangements were made for a medi-flight to meet Reiner and his mother at the Maputo airport where he was life-flighted to South Africa. As of today (Wednesday) he is sedated, but the doctors have finally been able to stablize him and are pleased with his condition. Please pray for Reiner, his family, and our team during this difficult time.

All church get together

A couple of the sweet kids from Magola.
I thought you might enjoy some highlights of our recent all church get together in Magola. It turned out to be such a blessing despite the cold and rainy weather that thankfully held off for most of our service.  Afterward lunch, prepared by the women, we dedicated the water well to the community. It's so exciting to see the church have an impact on the community for good.

Water Well Dedication

Last Sunday, we enjoyed all of our churches getting together for worship in Magola. Despite the cold and rainy weather, we had well over a hundred people come. I'll post a short video of this in a few days, but in the meantime, we also gave the well recently dug to the community and had a short dedication ceremony. I was touched again at how having water nearby will change these people's lives.

Be blessed,

Lisa

Water in Magola!

Imagine having to walk a mile and a half to get your water because you didn't have a well in your village. Everything you need water for, cooking, cleaning, and bathing, has to be carried on your head.

We are so excited that the village of Magola now has water! A big thanks to the Fellowship at Cinco Ranch who funded this project. Watch the video below for some highlights.

Here is a photo of the twins we have been providing with formula. They are crawling now and into everything!

The structure for the church is almost done in Magola as well. We will have big worship service next Sunday with all of our churches coming to Magola. In the afternoon, we will dedicate the well and officially give it to the village.

HOMES FOR THE HOMELESS: We are getting ready to build some more house for the elderly who either don't have a house or whose houses are falling down. You can find more about how you can help here.

Homes for the Homeless

Late last year, through The ECHO Project, we put out a request for help for some of the elderly who were in need of a place to live. The response we received was overwhelming, and we were able to build four small houses. Mel and Mandy have recently come to work with us, and one of their heart's desires is to help the poorest of the poor.

Once again, we would like to partner with them to provide homes for several elderly who are in desperate need for a place to live. Two are living under trees and a third one is living in a hut that is falling down. One house costs approximately $200 to build, and through The ECHO Project we would like to fund three new houses.

If you are able to contribute toward the building of a house or sponsor one (or more) entirely, donations can be sent via check or through Pay Pal here. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me.

To learn more about what God is doing through the ECHO Project, please visit our website. All money raised for The ECHO Project goes directly to help those in need.

Safari Highlights

Between dropping off our eldest in South Africa to return to school, car maintenance, and other errands, we stopped off by Kruger on the way home for two days of rest after our very busy 'winter' and had some of the most amazing sightings we've ever had. Here are some of the highlights.

Enjoy!

Africa in Photos

Here are a few recent photo I thought you all might enjoy. Thanks for stopping by!

Gabe asked me why I needed more family photos, but when our family is only together three times a year, a family photo means a lot to this mama!

Outside in our garden

Progress on our house! This is actually the garage that they are working on right now.

They are getting ready to lay the floor and start building the walls.

Lots and lots of bricks.

We spent our last day off at the beach with the kids.

Love this view of the Indian Ocean!

Mel and Mandy, from England, are working with us and have started a new women's class and prayer time out in one of the villages.

We are very blessed for them to be here with us.

Here I am at the end of my deadline. . .just kidding. Not me, but I am excited to be almost done with my next romantic suspense that's due September 1st. Next I'll be jumping into book two of my Revell series, the first of which comes out next year.

Be blessed,

Lisa

Snapshots

Hanging out.
I've been feeling a bit sentimental lately. A big part if it comes from having my oldest home from boarding school. I LOVE having him back. But it also makes me realize how much I miss him when he's gone. It's hard to complain, though, when I realize how much he loves school, and how wonderful it has been for him. So while I've been quiet--at least when it comes to blogging and FB--I've been soaking up my family being together, and making sure I don't let these days disappear without my completely enjoying them.

Question for you: What did you enjoy the most this summer break? (Or winter break for my friends in the southern hemisphere!) A memorable trip, an accomplishment, time with family, a good book? I'd love to hear from you!

The end of summer. . .

When I read my Facebook posts, it seems that summer is finally coming to an end. Vacation is ending, school will be starting soon, and hopefully the weather will begin cooling off.

Well. . .things have been a bit different on our side of the world.

*It's finally cool enough for me to function with winter here. Perfect weather, actually.

*Forget summer break. We've just finished a whirlwind season hosting five, short-term mission teams from the US, Brazil, and South Africa.

*School is. . .almost over. The kids have been working hard and will finish up the end of next week!

*We spent the last week working hard converting our school room--which was converted to a storage unit when our team mates arrived earlier this year--to a small apartment for Mel and Mandy who will also be working with us. They will be staying here until the electricity is put into the house we've built for them
out at the land.

*In the meantime, work on our house continues with the foundation pretty much finished!

*Ministry: We had three more baptisms this past week. We praise God for the way He is moving, and how He used the recent groups to add to our ministry.

Interview with Nora St. Laurent

As an author, it's exciting to meet people who have a passion for stories. Today, I'm taking a break from my normal posts and introducing you to Nora St. Laurent who started The Book Club Network with her husband. If you're interested in finding good books to read and ways to win free book, read on!

Lisa: What inspired you start TBCN?

Nora: The Book Club Network was born out of a desire to share Christian Fiction authors with other book clubs, share book club ideas with other leaders and to encourage the authors who are writing such amazing books. The economy has been really tough for a few years and people are not parting with money like they used to. Through TBCN they can take their time and find the right book or win it. We have give away opportunities each month. ALL of our contests are from the 19th – 21st of the month.

I run two face to face book clubs one at the Christian Book Store I work at and the other at the church I attend. It’s a position I never imagined I’d be in since I didn’t read for pleasure much before I started working in a Christian book store 11 years ago.

But since I love talking with people and the main thing to talk about in a book store is books I started reading Christian Fiction (publishers sent ARC copies to our store and I started checking them out) The first book that rocked my world and got me hooked in Christian Fiction was a book by Linda Nichols called Not a Sparrow Falls her next book did me in and I couldn’t stop talking about it, At the Scent of Water was her next book that prompted me to contact the author and let her know how much her book touched my spirit.

After reading these two books and telling customers about these reads I had a reason to read.  These books spoke to me because I wasn’t expecting it. It reminded me of the stories in the bible. Jesus is the greatest story teller and He knew a story could change a life or prick our spirit and move us in a direction we never thought we’d be in.

I tell you all that to say I’m dyslexic and I have not been a fan of reading. Movies were more my thing. I could watch a movie of a book and have a lot more fun. Reading Christian Fiction changed my life in more ways than one.  I wanted to tell everyone about the greatest book I read, and I’d do that at the book store.  It was possible to talk about the new book I read and loved for about a month or more but when At the Scent of Water and Not a Sparrow Falls were not on the shelf anymore, I had to find some other books to talk about at work.  I’m not a very fast reader so; discovering the next new book was a challenge. Would I get the book read before it disappeared from the shelf?  How long do books live on a book shelf? The shelf life of a book was a mystery to me and still is.

I was whining to my husband Fred about my problem. How can I get the word out about great books for a very long period of time? Being a man who likes to face challenges head we began to talk about how we could do this and the fact that I can’t read books fast enough to keep up with it’s shelf life at the store.

I also told him as a book club leader I wanted to promote great books and share them with other groups. Not everyone has the advantage of working at a book store and see what new books hit the shelves each week. Another struggle I had was if I had an author speaking at my book club I wanted to share them with other book clubs in the area. How could I do that? Where are book clubs meeting?

Our answer to many of these questions and more was the birth of The Book Club Network - TBCN. Connecting authors to book clubs and readers to their books; it’s also a network of book clubs as they post what they’ve read and how the meeting turned out.

It’s a place to find where a book club is located. We have a member map where you can find a book club near you. Message them and see if they are accepting new members. I envision it to be similar to be similar to the Weight Watchers program (don’t laugh Grin) you can go to a meeting anywhere in the country right? All you have to do is look on line and get connected. This is my hope for the future of TBCN.

Lisa: Have there been any surprises for you @TBCN? What benefits have you seen by bringing readers and authors together?

Nora: I’ve been encouraged and fascinated by our growth. I can see there were other people out there like me wanting to connect with other book club members.

I’ll tell you what has surprised me is the author/reader interaction each month. This is something I didn’t foresee as I’ve watch the authors are having a blast interacting with the readers and visa/versa. The beauty of this discussion is it’s there forever for all to read no matter when you join TBCN.

The authors have done a great job coming up with questions for reader to answer that give them a peek into their book – create interest and then the discussion helps book club leaders connect with the author. I’ve been pleasantly surprised at the amount of authors that want to be featured @The Book Club Network. It’s been a great thing.

The interaction with the authors is almost like having a book club meeting on line. It’s a huge benefit for both the authors who’ve wanted to ask clubs questions and readers who want to get to know authors. The authors are catching on. Our sponsors have loved the interaction as well. Members have told me that they love the author interaction from the 19th-21st as much as having a chance to win all these books. It’s hard to know if a book will be a fit for your group so these interaction times are helpful for that and so much more. Another thing I love about TBCN members is the fact they are not afraid to share what they think in a good way. I’ve learned so much and laughed out loud in some discussion where the questions lead to sharing funny moments.

My hope is that book club leaders and/or members participate in the discussions and make that book connection with the author and their book. I want TBCN to be a tool for them in picking out their books. Maybe invite the author to speak to their book club on the phone. It’s my hope. The discussion will be there forever. No worries about a books shelf live here @TBCN. So, everyone has time to get to know each other!! It’s a beautiful thing!

Lisa: How can readers join in the anniversary celebrations?

Nora: It’s easy to sign up to be a member of TBCN.  We ask a few questions for you to answer and for other information that helps us keep spammers and other information seekers out of the network. It’s also FREE. You have opportunities to win lots of books. For our BIRTHDAY BASH we are giving away 10 books a day and announcing winners once a week. You’ll have all week to enter the daily featured contests.

Lisa: Do you have any other comments for my readers?

Nora: If you are avid reader this is the place for you to learn about the latest in Christian Fiction and interact with the author each month.

Are you a book club leader? Well this is the place for you to find your next book club pick. We’d also love for you to set up your Book club page at our site for others to see. It’s a place to share your latest featured book. Post pictures of your club and the field trips you’ve taken. The authors you’ve met and the book fun you’ve had. Learn from other book clubs that have already set up their pages.

Want to start a book club but felt it was too overwhelming? You can learn from other experienced book club leaders, and you can start right away making your book club list!
Do you like to win books? This is the place for you. You’ll have a chance to get to know the authors and their books and read genre’s you normally wouldn’t. We’ve been giving away about 100 books a month and for our birthday bash it’s going to be 10 books every day; starting August first. Winners are picked weekly and announced each weekly.

THANK YOU! You’ve been a grand host to have me here and let me talk about The Book Club Network and our Birthday Bash!! I hope to see you there @TBCN www.bookfun.org

Annual English Camp!

It's been a busy week as we welcomed a group from Texas and Brazil who came to host this year's English camp. So far, we've had a great week with the campers who have come to not only work on their English, but also learn more about God through games, dramas, singing, activities, and service projects. We also include some of the campers from former years to be ambassadors to the new campers. I'll be putting together a video later, but for now here are a few photos.

Campers and staff divide into groups to get to know each other on day one.

A week in Pictures

We are so thankful for two groups who spent the week in ministry with us, both from South Africa. It was a great week, with lots of relationships built, contacts made, and work accomplished. I shared a number of other things that happened last week, if you missed those posts.

We also praise God for two women in Quinjata who have been coming to church for quite a while and who gave their lives to Christ and were baptized in the ocean yesterday! (Unfortunately, I don't have photos of them.)

Janu gets his wheelchair!

While it took a lot longer to have this special wheelchair built than we had planned, it was all worth it to see Jano's smile when we delivered it to him last Sunday. What a precious boy!

A big thanks goes to the Creek Kids at Sugar Creek Baptist Church who collected change for The ECHO Project to supply vitamins for children in the villages we work with and to build this special chair for Jano. Visit The ECHO Project website to learn more about what is happening and how you can make a difference!

Aleyna goes to Mozambique

Those of you following my blog know that June and July are always a very busy time for us as we host short-term mission groups wanting to get involved in the work here. This year, has been extra busy as we have two groups from the US, two from South Africa, and a group from Brazil arriving next week for English camp. On top of all of that we are also trying to build our houses at the same time.

South African group brought Jano his wheelchair! (More on this soon)
This week we are hosting two groups from South Africa as well as two college grads from the US who are both spending a month here with us working in ministry. I thought you might enjoy one of the updates of one of our summer interns, Aleyna, as she shares what has been going on the last couple of days. Enjoy!

"So I am two days behind in my updates...Yesterday (7/3) we worked on the veggie tunnel and then we went into town to host the English club. About this veggie tunnel - I have a new found appreciation for any farmer! Alissa and I worked with a few Mozambicans to till the land where the veggie tunnel (which I found out today is actually going to be more of a veggie rectangle) and that was hard work clearing all the brush and roots. It was all manual labor - we had our hands and a few hoe looking things.

Wish I had gloves because there was definitely some poisonous scorpion looking things in the ground that we had to kill. I am still sore two days later from all the bending over. When the team from S. Africa arrived Alissa and I helped sew panels of netting together to provide the covering for the veggie rectangle. I learned how to say thank you very much in Afrikaans - I have no clue how to spell it - it sounds like "buy a donkey".

In the afternoon we went to English club with the S. African team and hosted a lesson/craft on being fishers of men. We met and talked with Jose and Alice. Jose spoke excellent English and Alice was super shy.

Afternoon at English Club

Alissa and Alyena
Today (7/4) I wore the post patriotic clothing i could find- my Texas flag shorts from Tyler's and a shirt with the American flag - in honor of the 4th of July. Happy 4th from Mozambique! The ladies from the S. African team and Alissa and I went the the orphanage down the street. Talk about heart breaker. I wanted to take all of them home with me! There is a playground right next door so we went and played this S. African game called "Rotten Egg" that is kind of like "duck, duck, goose", Red Rover, and this other game that doesn't really have a name.

The little boys sat in a line in front of a soccer goal post and grabbed on to each other around the chest to make a chain. The point of the game was for someone to peel off one by one each kid from the line. They were surprised that I could pull them all off! After the orphanage we went into the local market...I still had my Texas flag shorts on and EVERYBODY knew that I was from the US some people even knew I was from Texas :-) I practiced a little bit of Portuguese...thank goodness some of it is coming back to me!

Hanging out at the orphanage
At English club today we talked about the story of the Jesus feeding the 5000 with just 5 loafs of bread and two fish. I got to visit with a lot of the disciples (yea!!) and meet some more new friends. I met a new friend named Delson who helped me with my Bitonga. He was surprised I knew the few words that I did! I am learning parts of the body now...I hope I can remember them tomorrow!

English Camp
I am absolutely LOVING my time here! Every time I come it feels like home and its especially nice to have friends and see familiar faces in town. Thank you for praying for me and those around me!!! So far the Lord has been shining His Glory on this trip and all that I have encountered so far!

New friends

Old Friends
P.S. Scott said that there are two ladies in the Quinjata village church who want to be baptized Sunday! I am so excited! Hopefully in the next few days I can post some pictures and I will try and get a video of the baptism!
